The thirteen American colonies declared themselves independent of Great Britain two hundred thirty seven years ago today. And they did so with these words.
For my American friends, celebrate as you see fit, but please take a few minutes to read this as well.
It’s once again the anniversary of the day the United States of America declared its independence from Great Britain, and for those of us in the states it is — as it should be — a day of celebration and festivities. Barbecue pits are simmering, pools are being cleaned, beer is being iced and fireworks are waiting to be lit.
Before you do any of that, though, let’s try to remember what it took to get us here.
